ESTECO proudly supported the Second Workshop on Open Source and the Internet for building global scientific communities held from 28th of November to 16th of December 2011 in Trieste, Italy.

The workshop, organized by ICTP (The Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics), was focused on environmental monitoring and distributed instrumentation.
The event was an unique chance to discuss about the advantages of using open source frameworks and the potentiality of Internet tools, that allow quick and easy customization in different fields. The aim was also to create a worldwide community of experimental scientists in developing countries with proper skills in data collection and data management.

Three intense week faced topics like Hands–on Open Source Software; Web Technology and Web Services for distributed applications; Working with small, medium and large embedded systems; Networking of embedded systems for communication between them; Data collection and processing using open software; Distributed data management using open software.

The workshop led to the kickoff of three promising projects: the first focused on the optimization algorithms in Nigeria, the second seeking the optimization in VIOP systems in Sudan and a third one dealing with solar energy in South Africa

This experience also allowed for the exploration the possibility of using mobile technology in collecting and disseminating data as Carlos Kavka, - workshop co-director and head of R&D a ESTECO explains.

This initiative has been the first step for ESTECO to encourage the research in developing countries, providing knowledge and technology. modeFRONTIER has been already used for this purpose (see ► “Optimization of waste stabilization pond design for developing nations”, “Convertible Stadium in South Africa”, “Multiobjective Optimization on Urban Flooding”), but this sponsorship is an important step to create an ongoing program to stimulate the engineering research in developing areas.
